Bible reading note--Job‬ ‭1‬-1

Bible reading note

Job 1

In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”

Job 2

On another day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.” The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.” He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was.

Job 3

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it. May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it. May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn, Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed? Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day? “Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water.

Job 4

Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking? But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed. “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed? The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken. Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people, ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker? Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.

Job 5

“Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed. For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you. You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals. You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing. “We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”

Job 6

Then Job replied: “If only my anguish could be weighed and all my misery be placed on the scales! The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God’s terrors are marshaled against me. I refuse to touch it; such food makes me ill. “Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope for, “What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient? “Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty. Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go off into the wasteland and perish. Now you too have proved to be of no help; you see something dreadful and are afraid. deliver me from the hand of the enemy, rescue me from the clutches of the ruthless’? “But now be so kind as to look at me. Would I lie to your face? Relent, do not be unjust; reconsider, for my integrity is at stake.

Job 7

“Do not mortals have hard service on earth? Are not their days like those of hired laborers? Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired laborer waiting to be paid, When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’ The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn. Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again. He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more. When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint, “What is mankind that you make so much of them, that you give them so much attention, Will you never look away from me, or let me alone even for an instant? Why do you not pardon my offenses and forgive my sins? For I will soon lie down in the dust; you will search for me, but I will be no more.”

Job 8

Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: “How long will you say such things? Your words are a blustering wind. When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the penalty of their sin. “Ask the former generation and find out what their ancestors learned, for we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are but a shadow. Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless. They are like a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden; But when it is torn from its spot, that place disowns it and says, ‘I never saw you.’ “Surely God does not reject one who is blameless or strengthen the hands of evildoers. Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tents of the wicked will be no more.”

Job 9

Then Job replied: “Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God? His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has resisted him and come out unscathed? He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars. He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. When he passes me, I cannot see him; when he goes by, I cannot perceive him. If he snatches away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’ Though I were innocent, I could not answer him; I could only plead with my Judge for mercy. He would crush me with a storm and multiply my wounds for no reason. If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty! And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him? “Although I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life. When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent. They skim past like boats of papyrus, like eagles swooping down on their prey. Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot.

Job 10

“I loathe my very life; therefore I will give free rein to my complaint and speak out in the bitterness of my soul. Does it please you to oppress me, to spurn the work of your hands, while you smile on the plans of the wicked? that you must search out my faults and probe after my sin— You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit. “But this is what you concealed in your heart, and I know that this was in your mind: If I hold my head high, you stalk me like a lion and again display your awesome power against me. You bring new witnesses against me and increase your anger toward me; your forces come against me wave upon wave. Are not my few days almost over? Turn away from me so I can have a moment’s joy to the land of deepest night, of utter darkness and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
